Fowler’s First Win This Season
Coming into Sunday’s final round of the Honda Classic fan favorite Rickie Fowler had a four stroke lead after playing near flawless golf the first three days scoring 66-66-65. However, were he still in the booth commentating, Lee Trevino would have described Fowler’s fourth round aptly as “coughin’, sputterin’ and throwin’ oil.”
And Trevino would be correct.
Sunday, over the difficult PGA National course, Fowler was brilliant at times making five birdies and at times not so brilliant carding four bogies and a double on his way to a 71. However, it was good enough to maintain a four shot margin on the field with the strong finishing Morgan Hoffman and a fading Gary Woodland in a tie for second place.
Though Fowler hit only seven of 14 fairways in round four, for the first three rounds he was over 70% and therein lies a lesson for recreational players. Namely Fowler shortened his driver by one inch to 43.5 inches and for the week, even with the less than accurate driving on Sunday, hit over two-thirds of the fairways. Plus his driving distance was a respectable 303.9 yards.
The point of course is while a longer driver will theoretically produce more clubhead speed and therefore distance it is possible to still hit it a long way and yet be more accurate with a shorter shaft length. So it makes sense to talk with a PGA Professional and see if a shorter shaft on your driver will improve your accuracy and, since you quite probably will hit it more often in the center of the clubface, your distance may not suffer.
Fowler is on the Cobra staff and with the exception of his putter plays all Cobra clubs.
His driver is the Cobra King F7+ which has sole weights that can be moved for three different center of gravity settings in the front, back and heel positions to give different trajectory and curve biases. There are two 2 gram and one 12 gram weights and placing the 12 gram in the front position near the face produces a lower ball flight with less spin. Placing it in the back position gives a higher trajectory for more carry and in the heel position it helps correct a slice.
The F7+ crown is weight-saving carbon fiber saving weight which has been redistributed towards the sole and rear of the clubhead to increase the resistance to twisting. The face is a re-engineered version of Cobra’s E9 variable thickness design and forged from titanium with a generous sweet spot. They also use the well regarded MyFly and SmartPad construction for adjusting the loft while keeping the clubface square.
A really neat feature of all Cobra drivers this year, the King F7+ included, is they come with Cobra Connect using the Arccos shot tracking technology. Every drive is recorded for distance and accuracy by paring the sensor in the butt end of the grip (totally unnoticeable) with the free Arccos Driver smartphone app. Not only is driver performance tracked but the app also is a GPS range finder.
