Tour Edge Golf’s fairway woods and hybrids have always drawn a lot of attention to the Batavia, Ill.-based club manufacturer and for the new season they have three new iron models that should also create some buzz.
In the game-improvement category there is the EXd model which Tour Edge bills as providing distance with forgiveness. The head has a generous offset with the deepest undercut cavity ever used in an Exotics iron. The face gets added flexing at impact due to its free-standing design and there are two tungsten sole weights (positioned heel and toe) for more stability and resistance to twisting. Vibration dampening comes from a plastic TPE insert. EXd’s retail for $599.99 (4-AW) with KBS Tour 90 steel shafts. Should you want UST Mamiya Recoil graphite shafts the price is $100 additional.
The new EXi model offers “playability with added distance” in a more traditionally shaped head than the EXd, i.e., less offset combined with a dual undercut cavity and a sole slot behind the club face. The sole slot has a modified version of Tour Edge’s Power Grid design allowing a thinner sole that makes shot-shaping easier. The insert in the cavity back is again a TPE that helps give a softer feel and the face has a variable thickness design similar to the EXds. Suggested retail is the same as for the EXd model.
Finally there are the CB Pro Tungstens which Tour Edge says are “the most technologically advanced set of Exotics irons ever” and feature a good-looking hollow clubhead construction combined with heavily weighted sole. Because of the hollow body the head needed to have added weight and the solution was the tungsten-nickel weighting (from 90-95 grams with the long iron having less and short irons more) in the sole. But also meant engineers could use a very thin free standing face for added ball speed. Put together the CB Pro Tungstens offer lots of forgiveness plus distance and control. A set of 3-iron through pitching wedge with KBS Tour 90 steel shafts retails for $799.99 and $899.99 with UST Mamiya Recoil graphite shafts.
